  • FEA Legislative Report Card
    Jul 18, 2018

In this current time in United States history it may seem that politics are too overwhelming or impossible to change. It may also seem that politics are unrelated to our daily jobs here in the school district. However, the reality is that every part of our jobs are impacted by the decisions, mandates & actions of elected officials from our local school board members, to our state governor, all the way to politicians in Washington DC. Bills that are passed into law in Tallahassee & in DC concerning public education funds, mandates on school security and even the requirements placed on specific schools for performance can correlate directly to your pay and working conditions!

Understanding this is the first step in being part of the change and protections we seek for our jobs and for the future of the free, high quality, public education that every child deserves in our state. The power you hold individually and collectively with all members of HSEF is in your knowledge and expertiese in your feild and ultimately in your vote!

You can learn more information on public education policy & legislation here on our site!

As public school employees we are held to high standards and evaluated regularly for our performance, and for the past two decades the Legislature has graded education staff professionals, teachers, schools, as well as students. The Florida Education Association decided it is about time that legislators get a grade for their work as well!

The FEA Legislative Report Card measures Florida legislators’ overall support for public education during the 2017 and 2018 legislative sessions, with each lawmaker receiving a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F for their voting performance on bills that affect education staff professionals, students, teachers & schools. Some of the bills include taking away union protections; expands and creates new vouchers for students to attend private school (weakening the public sector); permits school based staff & employees to carry concealed weapons on campus; prohibits a school board from granting extension of contracts for effective or highly effective school personnel; and changes the timeframe for a school that receives a D or F to be turned over to a for-profit charter company (no union protections for charter school employees); etc.
